City of Bees
The bee is nature's most perfect creature. Industrious, selfless and matriarchal, its social organization, through the ages, has been idealized and held up as a model for humans to mirror. The bee enjoys divine status in many cultures where honey, beeswax and mead (honey wine) are considered sacred. Bees play a vital role in our ecosystem but bee populations in many parts of the world are disappearing due to industrialization and environmental mismanagement.
City of Bees is a feature length hybrid essay film that explores the cultural dimension of bees and beekeping. Through contemporary experiences and situations it will express our timeless and endless fascination with bees. The film will be a born out of the synergy of beekeepers, artists, and healers who interact with bees in original, unusual and novel ways. The film will also address ecological issues and, in the process, touch on the relationship of humans to the natural world.
